Student Journalism Week

Hi TVMcGill world,

This week the Daily Publications Society (McGill Daily + le delit) are hosting their annual Student Journalism Week and they’ve tapped TVMcGill to help out. As you’re well aware, there is no journalism school at McGill and only one video production course is offered each year. This is where events like Student Journalism Week are super important/awesome. The Daily/Delit has teamed with Journalists for Human Rights, Media@McGill and CAPS to invite journalists, professors and experts so students can get an idea about the ins and outs of journalism.

TVMcGill is super excited to be apart of Student Journalism week again this year and will be hosting an Introduction to Final Cut Pro editing workshop Thursday, November 4th at 6pm in the TVMcGill office. This workshop will focus on final cut basics, but also effective journalistic editing (think intense fade to blacks, serif fonts, passionate instrumentals and shot-reverse-shot interviews). So please stop by and say hi and support Student Journalism Week.

More details can be found at www.mcgilldaily.com/journalismweek

Also if you have a moment check out http://media.mcgill.ca perhaps the awesomest research group on campus.

See you on Thursday!!!

OK GO Interview!

Our interview with OK GO last week was awesome! I had so much fun interviewing Tim and Damien (while also falling into the beauty that are Damien’s eyes). Check out some of these photos we got while at the shoot and the concert (photo credit Thea Fitz James). The guys made for a really fun interview, the two of them have amazing chemistry and I learned way more than I ever needed to know about Korean food, fragrances and anarchy.
Stay tuned for the interview and the excessive awkward laughter coming from me as I fell more and more in love with Damien (really, who couldn’t?)

Peace,

Bianca

TVMcGill General Assembly Live Stream

CGI Day 3

Hello friends,

The “Empowering Girls and Women” objective of the conference continues to dominate the discussions. The idea that investing in women is also investing in social welfare is a popular one among speakers and commitment makers. Presenters also continue to drive home the importance of mobile infrastructure and internet access in developing areas as keys to economic development.

Arthur, Charly and I have all been talking about our growing disenchantment with the conference. Members are certainly raising important questions and promoting worthy causes, but there is clearly a bias toward—even an over-reliance on—technological, “magic bullet” solutions, rather than solutions that address the systemic causes of poverty and gender inequality. One of the most interesting aspects of the CGI commitments is their small-scale nature. Programs like the “Ring the Bell” campaign are great examples of this mentality. But the ideas coming out of the “headlining” conferences with business leaders and heads of state cling to a handful of buzzwords: micro-lending for women, social networking, leap-frogging, mobile access, internet-based employment, maternal health…and it’s frustrating that the discussion has become so unfocused.

It is also frustrating that a conference focused on “Empowering Girls and Women” hardly touches the other half of the problem, “Not Oppressing Girls and Women in the First Place.” In his “Meeting of the Minds” conference with CNBC, Clinton says: “The reason women and girls are important is that most of the people who never go to school in the world are girls, most of the people who are denied access to education beyond high school are girls…I did this partly because I think this is a really big long term economic issue for the United States. Any time you give up more than 50% of your human potential, you’re playing Russian roulette with your future, and there’s more than one bullet in the gun.” In the same address he says that women are, in many places, considered property, but somehow this issue of inequality is filed under “economic problems” rather than “human rights violations”? What do you think, is it important to address this issue from both sides or should there be a focus on constructive, market-based, and educational initiatives that aim to close the gender-gap?

Today I’ll leave you with this: At a press conference discussing connecting refugees with mobile technology, musician and former refugee Emmanuel Jal performs a spoken-word piece about his experiences as a child soldier in Sudan.

That’s all for now,
Meg

CGI: Day 2 wrap-up

Hey all,

This morning marks the official beginning of the Clinton Global Initiative conference. Former president Bill Clinton moderated the opening session, accompanied by Melinda Gates, President of Finland Tarja Halonen, CEO of Procter & Gamble Bob McDonald and Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt. An ambitious range of issues is being addressed this week, from education in Haiti and the floods in Pakistan to women’s empowerment and market-based sustainable initiatives. Clinton featured several commitment makers during the opening session, including a group called Bell Bajao, which will be globalizing their campaign against domestic violence. It’s a great example of the kinds of small-scale innovations the conference promotes. You can watch some of their short videos and see for yourself.

The themes of change and hope give the conference a very feel-good atmosphere. For better or worse, there is very little critical dialogue about the causes of world poverty, the environmental crisis, and gender inequality—issues that CGI commitment makers are trying to tackle through their initiatives. CGI is all about tangible solutions and grassroots pragmatism.

Honorary guests at the opening session include the Presidents of Rwanda, Vietnam, Israel and more, including Charly’s personal idol, NY Times columnist Nicholas Kristof. According to Clinton, 67 current and former heads of state are present at this year’s conference. We also spied Maggie Gyllenhaal in the crowd and stumbled upon Avril Lavigne’s tweet about attending the conference (Canada represent!).

This afternoon we attended the Education Keynote lunch with presenter Geoffrey Canada, Meg’s personal idol, the Plenary Session on empowering women with US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, and a special session on peace in the Middle East moderated by former president Clinton with participants Salam Fayyad, Prime Minister of the Palestinian National Authority, and Shimon Peres, President of the State of Israel. Stay tuned for our video coverage later this week, and remember: TVMcgill has a mandate to represent you at this conference, so if you have any questions or want us to know what issues matter to you, please let us know by sending an email to news@tvmcgill.com, and we’ll look for answers.

TVM does CGI

Bill Clinton and Barack Obama will both be attending CGI 2010

Every so often TVMcGill has the opportunity to embark upon adventures outside of the McGill bubble, to explore, from your perspective, the world outside of Montreal and bring light to issues, concerns, and amazing events that are relevant to our fellow students.  In years past we have travelled to cities around Canada, such as the Tar Sands protests in Ottawa last year, as well as the United States, most recently for the 2008 presidential elections.

This year we have been lucky enough to be invited, through one of our alums, to attend the Clinton Global Initiative Conference in New York City.  From today, September 20th, until Thursday the 23rd we will be among world leaders as they discuss issues ranging from education reform to sustainable development, from Middle East peace talks to the future of micro-financing.  And we will be bringing this all to you through the channel we (and we hope you) know best: TVMcGill.com.  Stay tuned for pictures from the conference, interviews from world renowned and world famous individuals (including, hopefully, several Canadian politicians and celebrities in attendance), blog posts updating you on the going on, a possible live-stream, and general information from this event. A complete list of interviews and a schedule of talks we will attend will be posted soon; connect to us through Facebook and you may have an opportunity to have your question answered by a world leader in the field you’re interested in!

The nine hour drive down was tough.  As was the 7am wake-up call.  But Charly, Meg, and I are doing this all for you.  We hope you enjoy it as much as we will.

All the best,

Arthur Cormon

Technical Director, TVMcGill
